BTB 45 Q & A.

Couple of good questions have come through.  Again, please remember to post any and all questions here on the blog.

Q: I can cover all but one window in my bedroom.  Will an eye mask do?  A: Unfortunately no.  Your eyes aren't the only thing that can absorb light and halt melatonin production.  Your whole body can see light.  Check out the book Lights Out for more info on the subject.  You can still participate in the challenge, but you will not have complied with the "darkening" portion and will not reap the physical benefits either.  Sorry!

Q: I just had some blood work done.  Will that work?  A: It depends.  Most docs do not pull all the tests we like to see.  Not getting your blood work done, or not having all the tests we like to see included, is not a deal breaker, but you will get more out of this challenge if you can see your pre & post blood work changes.  It is really nice to see the changes.  The list of tests on the blood panel we like are on the very last page of your BTB 45 Guide that was emailed to you when you registered.

Any other questions?  Please post to the comments!

Any tips on freezing leftovers so that they're still tasty when you reheat them? I experimented with some extra veggies and they all ended up soggy. I'm planning on making the frittata recipe that's on the blog and want to freeze the extra for later. Thanks!!

I just use the basic freezer ziploc baggies and those seem to work well. Also, ziploc & glad both make an airpump that helps you remove the air from the bags. Requires special bags though. Special baggies are sold in the regular baggie area.

Charles is big on the vacuum sealing of frittata pieces. Melissa, are there certain veggies you are trying to freeze and preserve? Certain veggies are going to get somewhat soggy (I never ate a lean cuisine that had crunchy veggies). Here are some useful tips: http://www.uga.edu/nchfp/questions/FAQ_freezing.html#27

We have frozen:
Shepherd's pie
Curry
Burgers (vacuum sealed)
All kinds of grilled meats
scrambles
frittatas
spaghetti squash (with spaghetti meat sauce)
Pot roast with mashed cauliflower
Just to name a few.

Thanks, Jules! I tried to freeze raw kale, snap peas, and chopped onion because I accidentally ended up with WAY too much one week. Really the only thing that survived was the onion. I had better luck with the cooked items I froze (chili, soup, broth, etc.) I think some things just might not like being frozen.

I'm making your frittata tonight. I can't wait!!

Does anyone know if kohlrabi is paleo? It didn't come up when I searched the blog.

The BTB45 instructions say 2 to 4 Crossfit sessions per week. I've just started Crossfit. Can you recommend a pattern? Some of the trainers say 3 days on x 1 day off, or 2 days on x 1 day off. Obviously, both of those will lead to an average of more than 4 sessions per week.

Melissa, everything I've read seems to indicate that kohlrabi is just fine for paleo. Especially given it's part of the cabbage family.

Here are some other links for you:

http://nomnompaleo.com/post/5034401604/what-the-f-is-this-oh-its-purple-kohlrabi

It's about the same as broccoli (per cup) for calories, and a little (teeny bit) higher on the carb side, but nowhere near the amount of carbs as say potatoes.

Enjoy! Let us know what you make with it!

As far as freezing those items, I don't think leafy greens do well at all with freezing, and for the snap peas I'd blanch them then freeze them. I don't think they'll be nearly as good as fresh (is anything as good as fresh?) but it should still get the job done.
